Training & Education

We hold scheduled trainings twice a month, on weekends, that last between five and eight hours. To be in good standing, members must attend two thirds of all trainings as determined every six months. In between scheduled trainings, members get together to train and keep their dogs in good physical shape. The team meets monthly for a business meeting and continuing education session. Members must also attend two thirds of these meetings. Team members are strongly encouraged to seek additional training through seminars, conferences, reading, and workshops.

To become field ready, all ISD members are required to meet the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) requirements for SAR personnel. Members who become field ready, first become mission ready as a Navigator. These members accompany a dog team on searches and are responsible for navigation, communication, and other duties as assigned depending on the operation. Dog handlers become mission ready when the dog has passed the Canine Skills Requirements and has passed the novice level test in their discipline.
